I spent most of the 140 miles from Monterey to Morro Rock traveling in a hazy fog. In fact, this term haze sums up the majority of my photographic adventure in July 2013 as I cruised the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Despite the general lack of variety in weather, the blank grey skies were occasionally punctuated by some great, dense fog. The morning I captured this image, my friend/photographer and I had intended to shoot sunrise at a different location. After a 4 am wakeup and 2 hours of crossing our fingers, we left disappointed and pushed on to the famous ‘Lone Cypress.’ This turned out to be a huge stroke of luck because we arrived before anybody was there. Once we got set up, thick patches of fog and mist began sweeping in like waves and the distant rock formations intermittently appeared,  enveloped by the clouds, fading in and out of sight as though they were reaching into the heavens. It felt very peaceful and calm, and there was a moist chill in the air. We left that morning privileged to have witnessed such a special moment in time before the hordes of tourists rolled in.
